When I represented my country on the Olympic stage, I learned lessons that transformed not only how I approached volleyball but how I approached life. These lessons aren’t just for Olympians—they’re universal truths that every player, parent, and coach can apply to their own journey.
Today, I want to share three powerful lessons from my time as an Olympian that I believe can inspire and guide you, no matter where you are in your volleyball journey.
Lesson 1: Talent Alone Isn’t Enough
When I arrived at the Olympics, I quickly realized that every player on that court was incredibly talented. What separated the great from the legendary wasn’t raw ability—it was the discipline, preparation, and relentless drive to improve.
Talent might get you noticed, but it’s consistency, hard work, and the willingness to push through discomfort that will take you to the top.
- For Players: Dedicate yourself to improving every day, even when it’s hard. Master the fundamentals, and never stop refining your skills.
- For Parents: Encourage effort over outcomes. Celebrate your child’s growth and determination, not just their wins.
- For Coaches: Build a culture of discipline and accountability. Teach your players that showing up and putting in the work is non-negotiable.
Lesson 2: Teamwork is Everything
At the Olympics, the level of competition is so high that individual effort alone will never win games. Success depends on unity, trust, and the ability to perform as a team.
I was fortunate to be part of teams where everyone worked together toward a shared goal. We trusted each other to execute our roles and lifted each other up in difficult moments.
- For Players: Remember, volleyball is a team sport. Great players make everyone around them better. Communicate, support, and trust your teammates.
- For Parents: Foster a sense of camaraderie by encouraging positive interactions between teammates. Avoid comparisons that create division.
- For Coaches: Teach your players to value their role in the team’s success, whether they’re the star hitter or a supportive bench player.
Lesson 3: The Right Mindset is Key
Competing at the Olympics is as much a mental challenge as it is physical. The pressure is immense, and there’s no room for doubt or hesitation. What helped me perform under these conditions was the ability to focus, stay present, and trust the preparation I had done.

- For Parents: Help your athlete build confidence by reminding them of their hard work and preparation. Avoid adding unnecessary pressure before games.
- For Coaches: Incorporate mental training into your practices. Teach players to embrace challenges and see failure as a stepping stone to growth.
